Skate like a Girl Benefit Show: Girls that Shred
The Story:
Girls That Shred began as a grassroots benefit show supporting Skate Like a Girl, a nonprofit empowering girls and women through skateboarding. I co-founded the series with a talent buyer who curated the lineup, while I produced and managed everything else. It grew into a recurring concert series recognized by the media for both its bands and its cause.
My Role
I owned every stage of each event: promotions and marketing, sponsor partnerships, giveaway prizes, volunteer management, and day-of operations. Each production ran on a lean $1,200 budget that covered both band and marketing fees, so every dollar and every partnership had to work hard.
The Results
362 guests at the first show, which sold out
300+ guests at each of the next two events
About $8,000 raised per event for Skate Like a Girl, roughly 6.5x the production budget
Press coverage in Seattle Weekly, The Hundreds, and for the lineup and mission
Featured Artists: Tacocat, Thunderpussy, Tangerine, Peeping Tomboys, Chastity Belt, Lures, Katie Kate,
Why It Worked
With little money, the series relied on community & grassroots organization: sponsors who donated prizes and support, volunteers who staffed the shows, and a mission people wanted to be part of. That’s the approach I bring to every event, whatever the budget.
